Anytime a player can purposely crash or disconnect their client in the middle of a trade, interrupting it, duping (or item deletion) is possible.
Anyone play Pokemon with the pokemon/item duplication trick? Same principle.
Lag or disconnect based exploits. This kind of exploit exists in any MMO, even server based ones.
Anet can track down the origins of these items. But it will take them time.
The last time i Recall this dupe was possible was last January which was before the reconnect feature was even added.

As long as there is no rollback (which i am convinced there won't be) i'm happy.

think about it, if you'd duplicate a panda or kanaxai pet GW would practically fall apart. for instance, the panda & kanaxai are probably the most expensive items in the game, and you would not do yourself a favour (if you were a duper) to make them more common.
if you already had a panda & a kanaxai, why would you want more cash? of course there are people that are evil and think ruining a game's echonomy is solely fun, but that has yet not happened in GW (atleast as we know, maybe someone duped their panda 10 times over).
as far as i'm concerned, i don't care wether 10 extra pandas exist, just aslong as they don't get sold.

Armbraces are down to 20k now - Despite the warnings about Bannage still huge huge amounts of people still want them
I think the best suggestion Ive heard so far (and please forgive the forgetting of the name after so many posts read) is to simply make Arm braces of Truth useless - Make something else trade for Tormented Weapons. The only thing more expensive than an arm brace of truth before this all broke was Asian Pets so these should (as Ive said before but doubly so now) be a lot more accessible.
Note on Asian Pet sources btw: The price of MiniMallyx has degened a lot slower than the Birthday Minipets - perhaps an in game source (PvE) , even rarer than Mallyx, should be the way to do it

The dupers that sparked the discovery didn't have one to copy. That's why people saw offers of 1k+ armbraces for the high end minipets; clearly they would have if they could have.
It's fairly evident that this dupe did not become widely known until this weekend. It's entirely possible that someone a bit smarter than the guys that got caught DID duplicate them in small quantities a while back, and released them into the marketplace slowly. At this point, no one knows for sure.
In any event, there's no way that you could dupe them 'like mad' and easily offload them. The small proportion of the community that actually can afford to pay market prices knows the usual patterns of sale and is tightly networked. If a bunch of Kanaxais were to hit the market together, these folks would know something was up, just as they did when people started seeing 1k+ armbraces offered in trade.

Yup just been to ascalon myself.... 3 international districts!!! Tried getting into int 1 and it told me district didnt have any space... at 1pm on a monday afternoon... Never gonna see that again i suppose
Dozens of people wanting to buy AoLs (armbrace of lies) with all sorts of prices ranging 10k to 100k + 20e. A few people frantically trying to sell there's for 100k + 40e, before the dupers with there 1000's of braces to make their presence.
I know it seems a bit wrong to say, but if these idiot dupers did thier duping and sold these armbraces in drips and drabs 1 by 1 over the course of a week or so, they probably wouldn't have alerted everyone and caused all this fuss! Also decent traders would not have been affected! Prices would fall over time but that's to be expected.
Having said that, is thier idiocity a good thing in that they have highlighted that there is a fault in the game?
*Anet plz do something before i sell my foot for 1,000,000 armbraces!

Are people selling armbraces for 20k? or are there people that just want to buy them from 5-20k? I saw a few spammers in ID1 of ascalon wanting to buy cheap..last night a friend had sold his for 100k+30e cuz he saw this thread ._.

Just:
1) Dont buy an Armbrace of Truth. No matter how tempting.
2) Dont buy any rare Asian exclusive pets.
3) Wait for everyone to calm the Go Red down

Nah, youre over-reacting.
Guild Wars is probably the most resilient versus these kinds of things.
for one great reason.
No guild wars item is more powerful than the other.
Torment Weapons offer NOTHING more powerful than regular weapons. Just shiny shiny shininess.
All this does is make the market unstable on expensive items. Your casual gamer wouldnt notice the difference.

Depends entirely on how efficient ANet's reaction to the situation is.
Personally, I don't think the roof is coming crashing in on us just yet. There's a lot that can be done to at least mitigate the fallout, without resorting to the extreme measure of wiping the last month off the face of the earth.
Plus, keep in mind that there will be a bunch of new, desirable stuff that is dupe-free in two weeks.

AN IDEA:
First, I have no idea if this is possible, but it seems likely it would be.
Couldn't ANET reset the game to an hour or less before this thread was created, freeze game time (shut down servers for however long it takes) and carry on the investigation? Remove the guilty parties and let the game carry on from that point.
Before this thread, I don't think any of the dupers were freaking out, so this plan SHOULD work...feel free to flame if I'm missing something. : P

I know that Anet are responsible for their game but if they could forsee anything like this, they'd do something. It's only a couple of weeks before their expansion pack is released which means big money. I'm not saying they're a greedy lot but it's a business after all. They simply wouldn't jeopardize business if they could.
It's Anet's responsibility but they didn't intend for this to happen so you have to take it from their point of view.
I'll resevre my judgements on Anet and will assess them on their choice of resolution to the problem.

2 weeks before the release of new content? $$$
Shutting everyone off doesn't inspire confidence and, persoanlly, I'd clutch my wallet tight until I could rest assured that they wouldn't cut me off.

It would have to be more than a couple hours..maybe a few days?
Also i was just told in alliance chat that the reconnect message is disabled..so if we lose connection..theres no comming back..1 step closer to fixing this? Dupers might not be able to dupe anymore but what about all the armbraces and stuff they have now?

i smeel a crises in anet.
hope there will be a good solution. hope the copiesd armbraces are tagged and deleted. only thing is that i am scared there will a roleback of 1 or more days and that would not be fair for the fair players.
if so i demand a compensation of all my lost time

Just my opinion but a rollback will be much more devestating to this game then making all armbraces useless...think about it a month-wide rollback or something many players would be outraged.
